Batiquitos Lagoon
Batiquitos Lagoon offers a beautiful trail system to explore! The trail is somewhat roped off so you can let the kids run. The 610-acre lagoon is located 28 miles north of San Diego, north of Leucadia, at the southern edge of Carlsbad, and next to South Carlsbad State Beach. The Batiquitos Lagoon can be seen and experienced from a nature trail on the north side. The public walking and hiking trail is about 2 miles long. It starts just east of Interstate 5 at the end of Gabbiano Lane and goes most of the way to El Camino Real on the east end of the lagoon. There are five public parking lots providing access to the trail, one by the The Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation Nature Center and four on Batiquitos Drive. Take the Poinsettia Lane exit from I-5 and head east.
The Batiquitos Lagoon Nature Center, is located on the north side of the Batiquitos Lagoon and operated by the Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation. The facility, which opened in 1995, is located about a hundred yards along the eastern trail, from the trailhead that begins at the end of Gabbiano Lane. The nature center is a small mobile unit, tucked away next to some hills and near some trees. Inside, you’ll find a friendly Docent, some impressive animal and plant displays and some maps and information. Outside, is a kiosk with pictorial information and maps on the Batiquitos Lagoon.
